Idris Elba is having quite a year and he’s only getting started.
To continue the streak of what’s been a pretty fruitful season for the multihyphenate, Idris made his Saturday Night Live debut as a host this weekend and despite rumored jitters, Elba delivered on a strong monologue to get things rolling.
“I’m Idirs Elba and it is great to be here hosting Saturday ngith Live,” the actor, DJ and rapper began. “Before this, the closest thing I did to a comedy was The Wire.”
In his monologue, Elba comically described his life before the fame, detailing his gig as a doorman and bouncer just down the street from 30 Rockefeller where SNL is filmed at Carolines on Broadway. “It was a decent job,” he admitted. “I made some great contacts by which I mean, I sold weed.”
The apperance arrives in tandem with Elba’s debut on the stacked “Boasty” single and just ahead of the March 15th premiere of his Turn Up Charlie comedy series on Netflix as well as his directorial debut Yardie, set to arrive in theaters on the same date.
In April, you’ll be able to catch Elba hitting the stage at Coachella as well before a cushioned gap that divides us from the August release of Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, in which Elba has another starring role.
